THE YAKIMA EAGLE RIDERS COME THROUGH FOR CANCER RIDE AMERICA!

Dateline F.O.E. AERIE 289, Yakima:

Today Your Intrepid Cancer Cure Rider wishes to give an overwhelming, great big “THANK YOU” to the Eagle Riders Motorcycle Club. They are members of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, AERIE 289, Yakima Washington. And….you need not even own a bike to be a member! Pretty cool, I think. But, why am I talking about them now? Please allow me to explain.

There Yours Truly and Mission Control were, being honored by the Memorial Foundation, Yakima, and North Star Lodge, for this adventure we had embarked upon to help, even if just a little, with cancer patient care and research. The TV cameras were rolling, everyone did a little “Speachifying”, and the formal part of the event had pretty much wound down. Everyone was invited to a fantastic buffet they had set up, and most were wandering that way.

When all of a sudden here comes a group of ladies out of the crowd. They say “remember us”? Of course I did. They were members of my brother Terry’s Eagle’s Club and had helped in a very big way with his memorial service last year. In their arms is this:

Too late to publicly and properly thank them, Yours Truly realized they had made a huge donation to Cancer Ride America. I wonder who put the two cents in!

And so now I wish to correct that. Here’s how it all happened.

The Fraternal Order of Eagles Convention was in June at the Yakima Convention Center. Terry was a member of the Eagle Riders. Yours Truly and Mission Control had begun America’s Perimeter Tour – “To The Ends Of America To End Cancer” on May 28th, 2013, and the Eagle Riders Motorcycle Club decided to do something in Terry’s memory. Now, upon doing a little checking I was told that the Eagle Riders are “Big, Hairy, Burly…Etc. (Thank you Suzie), and a pretty scruffy crowd. And the nicest, most outgoing, warm and friendly people you could hope to have as friends.

So they got together, and with the blessing and support of Eagles President Bill Bryant, held a “Shave And Shine” to raise donations for Cancer Ride America. This was a complete surprise to Yours Truly, and even Mission Control, whom I thought had her finger on the pulse of everything! The Eagle Riders went around at the convention telling anyone who would listen about their efforts to honor a fallen member, and one lady even had her head shaved. Another lady donated her hair to the foundation so that a wig could be made for a cancer patient. One guy had half of his head and beard shaved lengthwise and went to the convention that way. You can imagine how much attention he got and how much awareness and support he garnered.

Today Your Intrepid Cancer Cure Rider wishes to publicly acknowledge and thank the Fraternal Order of Eagles, AERIE 289, Eagle Riders, and all Eagles members who contributed to this amazing effort we came to call Cancer Ride America. Terry’s loyalties and friendships were obviously very well placed. You have memorialized and honored him in a way that will carry into perpetuity.

Wheels Down,

C.C.R.
