Dateline El Cajon, California. Temp….113 degrees. This after your Intrepid Cancer Rider came from a high of 72 on the Pacific Coast.
But Yours Truly is ahead of himself (imagine that…..) I left Santa Barbara this morning with the second “End Of America To End Cancer” dominating my thoughts, prayers, and every move. So I rode hard, and got down to America’s SouthWest corner at Border Field State Park. Your Intrepid Cancer Cure Rider was mucho (a little local lingo) dismayed to find that the park is closed to vehicles except weekends and holidays. I wasn’t about to leave my stuff to get stolen while I walked the mile-and-a-half to the monument so I stood around wondering what to do next. I even considered riding through the pedestrian gate. I communicated constantly with Cancer Ride America Ground Control (Leanne) and obtained a lot of research and data on the target. While uploading “Plan B”, to Rocket Ship Cancer Cure America………
The United States Border Patrol, in the caped hero form (not really) of “Agent John Smith” came to the rescue! I explained my dilemma, he (probably)broke a bunch of rules, and he loaded my stuff and me into his 4 wheel drive and took me to an area that the public is not allowed at any time. Right to the monument, driving between the “big fence” that separates America and Mexico.
“Agent Smith” asked not to be publicly identified, but sir, you know who you are. As I explained, this is extremely important to me, as well as tens of thousands of Americans who are suffering cancer.
You made it happen, using good common sense and judgment in helping out a fellow LEO. And you have my, and all who are involved in this effort, our sympathies and prayers. Your mother is in God’s arms and resting peacefully. I promise you, I will do my best to help assure that no one in the future has to go through what your mom went through, and what you are going through.
Thanks to “Agent Smith” I got my pictures and went on my way. Who woulda thunk that the South West Corner monument is actually on the Mexico side of the fence! Look closely. You will see it behind me. And This Intrepid Cancer Cure Rider really appreciates the info that had I ridden through that gate I would have been quickly surrounded and questioned!
Next stop was El Cajon this evening, where the hotel desk clerk even said she wonders every year about this time why she doesn’t move from this “God forsaken place”. The sun has set though, it’s down to 101 degrees. Woo-Hoo!
Eastbound tomorrow on I-8. Your Cancer Cure Rider’s one concession to taking the Interstates…..on the advice of the United States Border Patrol….safety issues too close to the border.
Destination tomorrow flexible.

I am soooo glad you didn’t drive thru the pedestrian gate and get stopped by the Border Patrol. We didn’t budget for bail money!
